The Pakistan Business Forum (PBF) has sounded the alarm over massive agricultural losses in Punjab, reporting that flash floods have destroyed 60% of rice crops and 30% of sugarcane, while cotton production is expected to fall short by 35% of its annual target.
Farmers, however, believe such early damage assessments are premature, especially for rice, which naturally grows in standing water. They warn that exaggerated loss figures could fuel panic buying, hoarding, and rising inflation across the country.
PBF has called the scale of destruction “unprecedented”, stressing Punjab’s crucial role as Pakistan’s breadbasket and its importance in ensuring national food security.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the floods have already impacted over 3,300 villages and 3.36 million people, leaving widespread destruction in their wake.
👉 The situation highlights the urgent need for disaster preparedness, relief measures, and sustainable agricultural policies to protect farmers and ensure food stability in the future.
